UFC 99 Fantasy League Predictions

Those of you that have been coming to my Guy's Nights for the last year or so know how big I am into UFC. For those of you that don't know, we started a fantasy league on http://fantasy.ufc.com where we have to make predictions as to who is going to win each bout of a UFC Pay-Per-View event. Below you will find who I chose for each bout at UFC 99 as well as some explanation (about the main cards at least) as to why I picked them. Also, if you would like to join our fantasy league just shoot me an email through the contact page and we'll get you signed up. Thanks.

So there you have it. Now I'll hit the high points and give you a little insight as to why I picked who I did.

Rich Franklin v. Wanderlei Silva (Main Event) - Most of you that know me also know that I'm a HUGE Rich Franklin fan so I might be a little bias on this pick but I think that the stats are in my favor. I believe that both men are great fighters. Rich has had a lot of success in the UFC including his Middleweight Championship run. Wanderlei was a great fighter in Pride but has fallen off somewhat after entering the octagon. Wanderlei is known for his ability to attack opponents ruthlessly but is not known for his defense. I think Rich Franklin will be able to pick apart Wanderlei using counter attacks ultimately knocking him to the ground and going in for the kill forcing a referee stoppage. Rich's past along with the recent information about him training with Anderson Silva have led me to this conclusion.

Cheick Kongo v. Cain Velasquez - I'm going to be the first one to admit that I have fallen for the Cain Velasquez hype. If you've been reading what MMA commentators have been writing about Cain Velasquez you know exactly what I mean. To be honest with you, this pick goes against even my better judgment as I am a big fan of Cheick Kongo. Once I started to think about the fight, however, I threw my gut reaction out of the window. Cheick Kongo, while a force to be reckoned with on his feet, is not very good on the ground or defending the takedown. This pretty much leaves this fight in the hands of Cain Velasquez. If Velazquez can vary his attacks from high to low, use the clinch, and shoot in for the takedown at the right time there's not a whole lot that Kongo can do defensively. If Cain is as good at carrying out the game plan as his trainer and the commentators say, I think that he will be victorious over the Kongo.
